22nd Annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Festival June 24 - July 4, 2006
The festival, now in its 22nd year, brings together many nationally-recognized sponsors as well as dozens of local supporters. Over the past 21 years, proceeds have been directed to the Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped resulting in the construction of more than $7 million in facilities serving physically and mentally challenged individuals. Both national and international race teams have visited Sarasota, leaving behind more than $250,000 in winnings over the years. Estimated attendance is approximately 400,000 people.
After last year's 21st Annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix Festival, $165,000 was earmarked to provide facilities for services at The Florida Centers in the North Port area. This required expansion is due to the growing South County population in search of programs and services for children, and their families, that the Florida Center currently offers. Many families residing in the North Port area currently utilize the services provided at the Center's Venice location. The Venice campus receives an average of 13 calls per week with many children currently on a wait list until next Fall due to the lack of adequate space. The lack of space, along with transportation and other expenses make accessing services difficult, prompted the Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped to research alternatives such as the North Port area.
The Suncoast Foundation for the Handicapped has signed a 50 year lease with the City of North Port on property to construct a 10,000 square foot building. The Foundation hopes to commence site development work around May 1, 2006. The North Port City Commissioners have been very instrumental over the past several years helping identify property to build upon. This property will allow future expansion for The Florida Center to continue its mission of supporting the healthy development and strengthening relationships within families and communities.
